From the Beginning
In 1980, W. Mörmann and M. Brandestini developed a method of CAD/CAM dentistry (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) at the University of Zurich called CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, or CEramic REConstruction). This technology allowed for dentists to construct, produce, and insert ceramic restorations in a single appointment. Up until that time, dentists were required to take impressions of patients’ teeth and send them to a lab for construction, a process that took several weeks to complete.
How It Works
Through the use of methods like visible light scans, digital radiographs, or CT scans, your dentist takes a digital impression of your teeth and designs and manufactures the restoration on the computer. By using CEREC’s advanced design software and a milling machine, your restoration is produced according to your dentist’s prescription onsite. The chief benefit of this technology is the ability to receive a ceramic restoration in a single appointment, in addition to things like digital impressions being more comfortable than traditional ones and a reduction in the amount of follow-up work required.
CEREC Today
Today, over 3 decades since its creation, CEREC continues to be the premier dental restoration technology. In fact, it is estimated that this unique system produces nearly 7 million restorations each year. The process of milling the ceramic restoration takes anywhere from 6-15 minutes, roughly, making it one of the fastest cosmetic services available.
